Highest Yield ETFs

Data as of market close September 16, 2026 — updated every trading day by 8pm ET.

A high-yield ETF is a fund whose distribution rate sits far above the market average, and almost every fund on this list gets there the same way: by selling options against concentrated exposure and paying out the premium. That is a genuine income source, but it comes with a tradeoff you should understand before buying. Option-income funds cap their upside, so when the underlying rallies hard the fund captures only part of the move, while a sharp drawdown is absorbed almost in full. The result is a distribution rate that can print above 50% annualized alongside a share price that grinds lower. Distributions also frequently include return of capital, which lowers your cost basis instead of counting as current income. These funds suit investors who explicitly want cash flow, size positions accordingly, and hold them in tax-advantaged accounts where the tax character matters less. Ranked below by current annualized yield — sort of the opposite of a quality ranking, which is why the score-based list is worth reading too.

How to read a very high yield

A yield above roughly 25% almost never comes from corporate dividends. It comes from selling options, and the size of the payout is a direct function of how expensive those options were — which is another way of saying how risky the underlying is. That makes the headline number a volatility reading as much as an income reading. When implied volatility collapses, the distribution shrinks with it, so the yield you buy today is not the yield you receive next quarter.

The second thing to check is the composition of the payment. Option-income funds routinely classify part of each distribution as return of capital, which is not income at all — it is your own money coming back, and it lowers your cost basis instead of being taxed as a dividend. That is why a fund can pay out 70% annualized while its net asset value grinds steadily lower, and why total return, not distribution rate, is the only figure that tells you whether you actually made money.

Practical way to use this page: treat it as a screen, not a shortlist. Start at the top for candidates, then open each fund page to look at the split-adjusted price history, the distribution consistency and the total return since inception. Pair it with the score-based ranking, which weights NAV protection and stability alongside yield.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest yielding ETF right now?

The top of this list changes week to week because option-income funds set their distribution from the premium they collected in the previous week, and premium moves with implied volatility. The table on this page is rebuilt from live data, so the fund in position one is the highest current annualized yield we track.

Are high yield ETFs a good investment?

They are a cash-flow tool, not a growth tool. A 60% distribution rate paired with a 40% price decline is a negative total return, so the only honest test is total return over your holding period. High-yield option-income ETFs suit investors who explicitly want income, size the position accordingly, and hold it in a tax-advantaged account.

How is ETF yield calculated?

On this site annualized yield is the most recent distribution multiplied by its frequency (52 for weekly funds) and divided by the current share price. That is a run rate based on current conditions rather than a forecast or a trailing twelve-month figure.

Why do high yield ETFs lose value?

Covered-call and option-income funds cap their upside by selling calls, so they capture only part of a rally while absorbing most of a drawdown. Distributions also frequently include return of capital, which pays you back your own principal and mechanically lowers net asset value.

What is the risk of a 50% yield ETF?

A distribution rate that high almost always signals extreme volatility in the underlying and a payout partly funded from capital. The realistic risks are steep NAV erosion, falling distributions when volatility subsides, and a tax character that is mostly ordinary income or return of capital.
